The eyes of college football's biggest stage are upon Texas.
College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock told SportsDay's Chuck Carlton on Thursday that the championship committee is "watching Austin just like many others" as the state Legislature continues to discuss a bill that would govern which restroom transgender people can use.

The Austin Independent School District’s Liberal Arts and Science Academy (LASA) ranks No. 1 among public high schools in Texas, according to Niche.com, a provider of rankings, reviews, and statistics about schools and communities.
On its website, the Austin district says that “LASA offers a world-class education, rigorous curriculum and robust hands-on learning opportunities.” LASA shares a campus with LBJ High School.
“By recruiting the most academically advanced students from public and private middle schools throughout the city, LASA is a diverse magnet school with scholars from every ZIP code in Austin,” the Austin district says.

Scott Sayers remembers his first year at the former downtown Austin High School campus like it was yesterday.
Carrying an armful of textbooks down the set of stairs that led to the cafeteria, he missed the last step, tumbling to the ground as his textbooks scattered—to his horror, right in front of a group of senior football players.
“Freshman,” he recalled the seniors muttering.
Nearly 50 years later, Sayers laughed at the thought of recreating his embarrassing moment as he takes a tour of his alma mater, days before Austin Community College is set to break ground on renovations for what is now the college’s Rio Grande campus at 1212 Rio Grande St., Austin.

More than 100 people rallied at City Hall Thursday evening to protest an Austin Energy power generation plan they think does not go far enough to end the use of fossil fuels to power the city.
The plan, which has been approved by several city commissions, actually increases the goal of the percentage of renewable energy generated for the city from 55 percent to 65 percent with a contingency that could bring it up to even 75 percent.
However, dozens of people clad in green T-shirts and outfits were calling for Austin to end all fossil fuel use for generating power.

On July 31, President and CEO Linda Watson announced she is retiring at the end of 2017 after serving as the agency’s head for seven years.
Capital Metro’s board of directors met Wednesday afternoon to start the discussion of what the search process would look like as well as to weigh in on qualities they are seeking in an ideal candidate.
