Chito Vela begins term as Austin Mayor Pro Tem
Mayor Pro Tem Chito Vela (District 4)
Austin City Council Member José "Chito" Vela began the year by stepping into the role of Austin Mayor Pro Tem.
Vela, who represents North Austin’s District 4, assumed the position on Jan. 1 after being elected by his fellow council members. He succeeds Councilwoman Vanessa Fuentes, who served as Mayor Pro Tem in 2024.
The position does not come with additional voting power, but it carries public visibility.
The mayor pro tem fills in when the mayor is absent, presides over council meetings when needed, and represents the city at community events and official functions.
Vela is the first man to hold the position in more than a decade. In recent years, the Austin City Council has followed an informal practice of rotating the role among senior members, reflecting a collaborative approach to council leadership.
As mayor pro tem, Vela plans to expand his presence beyond North Austin. His priorities include housing affordability and transportation, with a particular focus on completing Project Connect, while continuing to represent his district at City Hall.
